Puppet Workshop

PUPPET WORKSHOP (DESI DOLLS)

PUPPETS CAN BE USED TO STIMULATE CHILDREN'S CONVERSATIONS AND CAN PROVIDE AN EXTRA STIMULUS FOR THEM TO BECOME ENGAGED WITH THE CURIOSITY OF DIFFERING CULTURES

Knowledge of differing cultures bring together ethnic communities and enable young people to reject cultural and social stereotyping.
Our workshop (Desi Dolls) - Children are taught how to make Indian puppets, learn about traditional dress. What is a Sari? How do we wear a Sari? What is a shalwar kameez? This workshop helps eliminate stereotypical views, children show great interest in the traditional dress and love to have pictures taken of themselves in the costumes provided.

To follow up from dressing up they then make puppets (Indian Dolls) and dress them in saris and shalwar khameez. We talk about how people dress around them including when they see women with the hijaab, its interesting to hear the comments made by children and its due to the 'not knowing' but then to be educated in a fun and inclusive way helps our children  in society to learn to accept other cultures and beliefs without it being a threat to them.

Children love to dress up and see how lengths of fabric are wrapped around to become an elegant garment worn by women. Boys enjoy trying the Shalwar Khameez and unusual shoes worn on special occasions.

Its wonderful to see teaching staff enjoying dressing up in Saris.

Children at St Thomas had a go at dressing up as well as making puppets.
